Logos 101: Logotypes

Authenticity and Balance Define Better Brands

What makes an effective logo?

It’s simple really, logos are only as good as the brands they represent. Still, you’ve seen plenty of poor logos representing decent brands. Why are they fighting against themselves? For a nominal up front investment—every bit as critical as corporate bylaws or business insurance—your business can be represented by a professional brand that makes sense.

A VFC-developed logo makes strategic sense within the structure of the client’s business plan, to their target audience and in juxtaposition to their competitors. Anything less puts your brand at a distinct disadvantage.

Not all logos need to include illustrations, glyphs or even a color palette, but they should all— even if they’re just logotypes—come from a strategic marketing plan defined by your company objectives and your brand’s personality.
Logotypes could be hand drawn or computer illustrated…they could start with a pencil sketch or with an actual font family, but what they all have in common is a real distinct flavor that communicates something extra to the target audience.

J-Tech Highway Safety

Uncle B’s Real Deal Southern-Style

When people see the streamlined, modern J-Tech logo they think modern innovation, when they see Uncle B’s flared letterforms they think quality BBQ, when the the strength of the Lewis brand they think stability, Dilworth’s says custom crafted, Hoishik says high-tech, etc., etc.
Just because your brand doesn’t always employ a glyph doesn’t mean that the typography shouldn’t be treated specially—in fact, a logotype can, with a creative brand management plan behind it, stand alone and stand strong.
