Working inside a design firm, you develop a few pet peeves. One of VFC’s has always been this: when creatives are treated like production tools instead of strategic professionals.

VFC was not built to function like Kinko’s, where someone walks up to the counter and tells a shift worker what to do, no matter how disconnected it is from real commercial communications. Our team studies business objectives, psychology, messaging, and positioning, not just layout and execution. We are here to think, shape, and guide, not simply assemble.

When a studio gets reduced to a print desk, a layout robot, or a production counter, something essentially valuable is lost. Good creative work is not assembly, and good creative work is what VFC is in business to supply. What we actually deliver is applied psychology, strategy, positioning, language, and visual problem solving, with original, authentic design as the delivery system.

None of us got into this work to push buttons on command. We chose it to think, shape ideas, and help clients succeed through creativity that is intentional and informed.

Good creative work is applied judgment.

Creativity Is Not a Help Desk Function

Most of us chose this field because we are creative problem solvers. We want our thinking to contribute to outcomes, not just outputs. VFC provides far more value than simply knowing how to run Adobe tools.

The strongest client relationships are collaborative and trust based. Clients bring goals, insights, and challenges and VFC brings structure, direction, and creative solutions. That partnership produces the best work.

When creative partners are reduced to task execution, the work suffers and so do the results.

The best work happens when clients hire experts and let them be experts.

AI Is a Tool, Not a Creative Director

VFC has been developing effective messaging and creative strategy for nearly three decades. Many of us individually have been doing it even longer. That experience is not replaced by a machine overnight.

But artificial intelligence is advancing quickly and, like every other creative firm, we are working to understand how to coexist and leverage it where it genuinely improves outcomes.

AI can speed exploration. It can generate references and rough starting points. It can help pressure test ideas. Used properly, it is a useful tool. But there is a line between a helpful tool and machine direction.

An AI layout is not an offense. It is a starting point. It is not a substitute for strategy, positioning, or creative reasoning built through experience.

AI can suggest but cannot take responsibility.

AI will change creative work.
How it changes VFC is up to us.

Setting Expectations Going Forward

Creative firms will need to be clear about how AI fits into their process. Here is ours.

We welcome references. We welcome inspiration. We welcome rough ideas from any source, including AI, when they are relevant to the work.

What we do not outsource is thinking.

Our responsibility is to evaluate, refine, reshape, and sometimes replace early concepts in order to achieve the real objective. That is the value of a creative partner.

If a relationship is purely transactional, there are better vendors than VFC, and that is fine. We are built for partnership work, not ticket processing.

A tool can generate options. A creative partner chooses the right one.

The Line in the Sand

When you hire VFC, you are hiring judgment, experience, and creative accountability.

Use AI. Send references. Share concepts. We welcome smart input in the context of the strategic plan or creative brief.

Random one-off AI layouts without context, however, are usually not helpful, but AI used in the right place can be. Right or wrong, those submissions irk a designer more than anything else at this stage of the game. If nothing is wrong with our deliverable why are you sending an AI suggestion?
